Top 5 Things from England That Are Cooler Than the Olympics!

With the Olympics going on, I have watched a few events. However, during the NBC broadcast last night I turned them completely off in favor of listening to the Rolling Stones. I didnt plan on listening to the Rolling Stones, that just happened. But it got me thinking, the Rolling Stones are so much cooler than the Olympics, and they hail from England. What else did England give us that could be argued as cooler than the Olympics?

5. Ian Fleming – Author born in London back in 1908 (what up Cubs fans?). Fleming is most famously known for creating James Bond. Although the first book is Casino Royale, the first movie made was Dr. No back in 1962. This launched one of the largest franchises in global history. The Bond flicks have grossed $4.9 Billion alone, and I for one, will be adding more to that total when the new one comes out.

Ian Fleming is a BAMF

4. Hugh Laurie – One of the funniest and most talented people in our modern entertaining world, Hugh was born in England in 1959 and has since been credited as an actor, voice artist, comedian, writer, musician, recording artist, and director. From 2004 to 2012, he played Dr Gregory House, the protagonist of House, for which he received two Golden Globeawards, two Screen Actors Guild awards, and six Emmy nominations. As of August 2010, Laurie is the highest paid actor in a drama series on US television. He also released an album called Let Them Talk which is phenomenal.

3. The Rolling Stones – Seriously, just grab a greatest hits album and treat yourself.

2. John Ronald Reuel  Tolkien – Born in 1892, Tolkien was an English writer, poet, and University Professor. He is best known for writing the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Although there had certainly been fantasy stories written before Tolkien wrote his epic tale, the popularity and cultural significance leads Tolkien to be considered the Father of the fantasy genre. Without him, we might not have amazing stories like Game of Thrones or perhaps even Star Wars that came later or games like Deungeons and Dragons or Magic: The Gathering…and then what the hell would Nerds do? Rock on JRR.

1. America – Thank you Mel Gibson and the rest of the militia men that helped secure our freedom back in the 1700’s. We were born of English blood, and that does make us awesome! But like any rebellious child, sometimes we have to go home and visit our parents, so enjoy us while you can during these Olympic games, England.
